Frequently asked questions
Why does Pro Tools keep saying audio files are missing?
Audio files go missing for a range of reasons, including session folders were moved without their referenced media, external hard drives were unmounted, or files were imported using Add instead of Copy.
Improper disk allocation or manually renamed or re-organised files can also break Pro Tools' file tracking index.
In this free course, we walk through exact drive permission settings and Disk Allocation rules so you NEVER trigger these errors again.

How do I relink missing audio files in Pro Tools?
To relink missing files (aka. "offline files"), open a Workspace Window from the Window menu > New Workspace > Default, then right-click the session file on the left and click 'Relink Offline'.
Alternatively, select Manually Find & Relink when opening a session.
Select the offline audio files, check your target audio drives, click Find Links, and select Commit Links once matched.
While this resolves basic missing files, there are a range of different situations that require more advanced approaches - which are all covered in this free course.

What is the difference between "Automatically Find & Relink" and "Manually Find & Relink"?
Automatically Find & Relink scans all connected drives for exact matches of file name, unique ID, format and duration. It links missing items to the first matches found and this cannot be undone.
In contrast, Manually Find & Relink lets you narrow search locations to specific drives or folders. In addition, you can search for file name and/or unique ID, with the option to include or exclude format and duration.
This course explains further reasons why Manual search is recommended by professionals.
We demonstrate step-by-step workflows for both methods in the course so you can quickly clear offline clips in any scenario.

Why are my Pro Tools clips blank or missing waveforms?
Blank clips or missing waveforms occur when the WaveCache.wfm file becomes corrupted or when underlying audio clips remain offline. You can often fix visual errors by 1) quitting Pro Tools, 2) deleting the WaveCache file from the session folder and 3) reopening Pro Tools.
This free online course explains the reasons for offline clips extensively, as well as best practices on how to fix Missing Files in Pro Tools for good.

How do I send a Pro Tools session without missing files?
When the session's audio files are spread all across the computer's drives, the most-commonly recommended workflow is File > Save Copy In... and ensure Audio Files is checked under Items To Copy.
While this works in general, it is not needed IF the Pro Tools operator keeps the session folder self-contained to begin with - which is the superior workflow taught in this free online course.
A self-contained session folder can be send without any need for Save Copy In.
