What you will learn in the webinar

Learning to mix is a lot like learning to play an instrument - it’s a lifelong journey, a learning curve with some detours, not a snap forward like a software update. There are no real shortcuts; you've got to put the time in and make some mistakes along the way. Learning curves are anything but linear, with phases of rapid or slow progress, and if you’ve been feeling stuck lately, you aren’t alone.

My own 25-year path definitely wasn’t a straight line of steady progress. Instead, it was defined by prolonged plateaus - months or even years where my mixes felt stagnant and no amount of new plugins seemed to help. But every so often, a "coin-drop" moment would occur. A sudden, counter-intuitive, mind-opening shift in perspective that instantly shattered the plateau and propelled my mixing up a significant notch.

In this webinar, I’m sharing these coin-drop moments from my personal journey. We’ll explore why the analytical mindset might be holding your music back, and how you can move past your own plateaus by embracing an ear-led, intuitive workflow.

Here are three of these:

Gain Staging

What they taught me in recording school held me back for years.

Every mix depends on how well the recordings were gain staged - which felt like an uphill battle for years. Eventually, I realised that sample peak meters led me to gain staging workflows that just didn't sit right with the way I feel music. Everything started to fall into place when I shifted my metering approach, my recording gain staging became muscle memory, and the level balance fell into place naturally - freeing up my focus for musical mixing workflows.

Mindset

Overthinking kills the spirit of a mix - instead, listen like a consumer

Working simultaneously in the music industry and as a university lecturer, I get to see both sides of the coin. It quickly became clear to me that rational, academic thinking has absolutely no place in creative mixing. In fact, I spend lots of my lecture hours drumming these over-analytical habits out of my students. In this section, I’ll share my personal keys to breaking out of the logic trap and stepping into a creative mixing flow-state.

Dynamic Processors

The gain-reduction sweet spot: my ear-led take on compression

Achieving the optimal compression effect with the absolute least amount of gain reduction - known by a small group of insiders as Yarn's Compression Law - is my personal take on dynamic processing. It's an ear-led compression workflow, focusing on the gain-reduction sweet spot, and you won't find it in any textbook. It works equally well for analog or digital, and it makes the difference between stock-plugins and expensive 3rd party plugins a lot less pronounced.

02 — Invest in yourself

Breakthroughs in mixing don't come from buying more plugins - but from developing your skills and artistic expression

Instead of chasing generic "one-click" formulas or "secret plugin chains," this webinar is about the true art of mixing. It's about how to unlearn overthinking in mixing, trust your ears, and make mix decisions with genuine musical intent. In contrast to the all-too-common rigid "paint-by-numbers" plugin chains, this webinar focuses on applying exactly what the song needs and nothing else, connecting with your inner artist to deliver deeply emotional, professional mixes.

"I loved the mix of theory and practice in this webinar. The speakers presented solid research on topics like growth mindset and time management, but they also gave practical examples and exercises for applying these concepts to real-life situations. I've attended a lot of webinars that are all theory and no action, but this one was the perfect balance."
